NUTRITION STRATEGIES FOR ADOLESCENTS – SORTING FACT FROM FICTION
Proper nutrition for adolescents and in particular, those engaged in sport, is an important issue facing parents, coaches and educators today. With the abundance of (over)information at our fingertips, it can be challenging to determine what is required for our teens at this very important stage in their lives. Teenagers are in a critical stage of critical growth and development during these formative years, however, research also suggests that eating habits developed while children are school aged are likely to be those they carry into adulthood. Couple this with the increasing numbers of teens interested in the impact of nutrition and supplements on mental performance in the classroom and physical performance in the sporting arena, sorting the fact from the fiction has never been more important. This workshop will explore current evidence on requirements for adolescents including the revised Australian Dietary Guidelines and Sports Dietitians Australia’s recently published position paper on Sports nutrition needs for adolescent athletes. We will also address the world or supplements, fad diets as they relate to this group. You will leave this workshop with solid, evidence based information around nutritional requirements and messages we as educators and carers should be passing onto our students.
